2025 Scholars
Roman Heuterman
Roman has been outspoken about trans rights since his work organizing against House Bill 71 as a sophomore in high school. At Borah High, he worked to help ensure trans students would not be deadnamed on class rosters and could use the restroom of their choice. He participates in Speech & Debate and will attend Boise State University in the Fall.
Finn Angelopoulos
Finn is a leading youth activist from Nampa. Finn founded the Renaissance High GSA during her freshman year and fought to ensure the club's survival amidst attempts to censor queer-affirming voices in the West Ada School District. During her senior year of high school, Finn was the face of the student movement for classroom free expression, after her school district famously tried to force Sarah Inama to take down a sign that read "Everyone is welcome here" on grounds that it violated state DEI laws. Finn is also heavily involved in BABE VOTE where registers Idahoans to vote and fights for student voice in schools. Finn will attend Boise State in the fall, where she plans to continue organizing and study Kinesiology.
Shaemus Wheeler
Previous president of the Lake City High GSA, Shaemus is a peer advocate in Coeur d'Alene and Moscow. At the time of receiving the scholarship he proved this by: volunteering in elementary schools, working to raise awareness about youth and LGBTQ+ mental health, and advocating for justice in Palestine. Shaemus was also a leading face in his high school's performing arts, serving as the Lake City drama club publicist and improv team captain. He is now attending the University of Idaho to study theater arts.
2024 Scholars
Scar Rulien
Founder of the Bruin GSA at Twin Falls High School, Scar has uplifted LGBTQ+ youth voices across the Magic Valley leading rallies, coordinating teacher workshops, and organizing the Southern Idaho Pride Week. Recently, as hate groups have sought to ban books featuring LGBTQ+ characters and storylines in Twin Falls and across the state, Scar has helped to found Idahoans Against Book Bans sharing stories, supporting libraries, and fighting back against far-right attacks on Idaho youth. Scar’s work isn’t limited to Idaho, though. They serve on GLSEN’s National Leadership Council working to create safe and inclusive school environments for queer students across the country and they’ve been recognized as equalpride’s 2024 valedictorian and featured in The Advocate Magazine for their activism. In their free time, Scar is a photographer and graphic designer. They will attend Boise State University in the fall, double majoring in Film & Television Arts and Narrative Arts. Congratulations, Scar!
Eve Devitt
For years, Eve has fought for the healthcare, equal rights, and basic humanity of transgender and non-binary youth in the Idaho legislature and national media, never wavering despite the hatred and vitriol she faced. She has also been involved in local and national climate justice initiatives, working for Snake River wild salmon and steelhead recovery with the Idaho Conservation League’s Youth Salmon Protectors and made headlines after her arrest in U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s office over FEMA budget negotiations in a September 2023 Sunrise Movement protest. A recent graduate of Boise High School, Eve will attend The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York and Los Angeles where she is studying Acting on Camera. Congratulations, Eve!
